A Guardian ad Litem (GAL) interview or evaluator meeting can feel like unfamiliar territory. A clear parenting journal can help you navigate it.
A journal may help you remember dates, identify patterns, prepare a declaration, organize documents, answer questions, and track compliance with a parenting plan. It may also help you identify concerns to discuss with a licensed attorney.
A journal is not automatically admissible evidence. Its value depends on accuracy, credibility, relevance, and applicable evidence rules.
Record the Parenting Picture
Focus on facts connected to your child’s care and daily life. Consider recording:
- Parenting time and activities
- School events and homework
- Medical, dental, or counseling appointments
- Meals, bedtime, and routines
- Transportation
- Communications with the other parent
- Schedule changes or missed visits
- Requests for information
- Your child’s observable mood or behavior
- Significant statements made by your child
- Actions you took to address a concern
Write each entry close to the event when possible. Use the date. Be specific. Stay chronological. Include only relevant information.
Strong entry:
“March 4, 2026, 7:30 a.m.: I picked up Sam at the scheduled location. Sam brought a school backpack and said, ‘I have a science project due Friday.’ We reviewed the assignment after dinner.”
Weak entry:
“The other parent is irresponsible and never supports school.”
The first entry identifies what happened. The second makes broad conclusions.
Facts First. Opinions Last.
Record what you personally saw, heard, did, or received. Avoid diagnosing the other parent, guessing motives, repeating rumors without naming the source, or using inflammatory labels. Do not turn every disagreement into a legal conclusion.
Preserve related records, including texts, emails, co-parenting messages, calendars, call logs, school and medical records, receipts, transportation records, and relevant photographs obtained lawfully. Do not alter screenshots or delete messages. Preserve originals when possible.
Protect the Journal: and the Child
Keep your journal secure. Use password protection when appropriate. Keep it away from children. Do not post journal entries or case information on social media.
Do not record conversations unlawfully. Ask a licensed attorney about recording laws before making audio or video recordings. Never ask a child to create evidence or report information for your case.
Prepare With Care
A calm, organized journal can help you answer questions without relying on memory alone. It is a navigation tool, not a guarantee of a particular result.
